Purple Day for (K9) Epilepsy Episode of "The Sibe Vibe" Features Fellow Blogger Susan Sehi-Smith of the White Dog Diary

Check Out Pets Podcasts at Blog Talk Radio with Dog Works Radio Show on BlogTalkRadio

To close out March, we hope you'll listen to, and share, our very special Purple Day® for Canine Epilepsy Awareness featuring our fellow blogger, Susan Sehi-Smith, author of The White Dog Diary who is the founder and president of the Paws to People: Bridges to Cures organization "committed to furthering comparative studies research in catastrophic diseases (such as epilepsy and cancer) to save the lives of humans and pets." I will also have a more in-depth interview with Sue about Paws to People in a later post, so please check back.

I want to thank Sue for an amazing show that is just chock-full of important information. She is doing some amazing work, and hopefully, one day, through comparative studies research, cures for both our two-legged and four-legged loved ones will be discovered.

I'd like to dedicate this post to both Sue's Epi-Angel, Quinn, and my Epi-Husky, Gibson.

“That is the wonder and excitement of comparative research to me…it is not about DOG disease…or PEOPLE disease…it is about ending diseases, period.”~Susan Sehi-Smith

Honoring Epi-Dogs on Purple Day® for (K9) Epilepsy AND a Very Special Announcement!

Today is the international Purple Day® for Epilepsy Awareness and, along with my Epi-Husky Gibson, I am very proud to be an official Ambassador for my third consecutive year. We join in the worldwide effort of bringing awareness, education, information, resources, and support to people about Canine Epilepsy. We also hope to help dispel some of the fear associated with seizure disorders and to let folks know they are not alone. We are here for you and hope we can successfully steer you in the right direction for assistance.

Gibson helping me post Canine Epilepsy information.

What is Purple Day?

According to PurpleDay.org, “Cassidy Megan created the idea of Purple Day in 2008, motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy. Cassidy's goal is to get people talking about epilepsy in an effort to dispel myths and inform those with seizures that they are not alone. The Epilepsy Association of Nova Scotia (EANS) came on board in 2008 to help develop Cassidy's idea, which is now known as the Purple Day for Epilepsy campaign. In 2009, the New York-based Anita Kaufmann Foundation and EANS joined forces to launch Purple Day internationally.

I'd like to once again share my FiveSibes Purple Day® video:

In Honor of Epi-Dogs & Epi-Angels Worldwide

We have a Purple Day for (K9) Epilepsy 2014 Photo Album over on our FiveSibes: Siberian Husky K9 News & Reviews Facebook page. It's a public community page, so even if you don't "do" Facebook, you are welcome to come visit and look around. We do hope you'll stop by and see these beautiful Epi-dogs from across the globe.

We are going to update our video for next year, so if you'd like your Epi-dog included, please Email a Purple Day photo, your dog's name, state & country to FiveSibesLiveGibStrong(at)gmail(dot)com
and put "Purple Day 2015 Video" in subject line.

Gibson would like to remind anyone who would like to purchase a copy of our What's Wrong With Gibson? Learning About K-9 Epilepsy book, a percentage of proceeds will be donated to the Canine Epilepsy Resources "Emma's Fund" through the North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine. To purchase a copy, visit our website store: ArcticHousePublishing.comwww.ArcticHousePublishing.com

I'd also like to take this opportunity to welcome House Wolf K-9 Dog Biscuits to the Purple Day Ambassadors! Representing Vermont, they have joined in the "Live Gib Strong" K-9 Epilepsy Awareness effort in many ways, including hosting a Purple Day event at their Edelweiss Bakery where they donated 100% of the proceeds from purple cupcakes, and 10% of the day's lunch, beverage, and pastry sales to The Wally Foundation for Canine Epilepsy that offers possible financial assistance to families, fosters, and rescues of dogs diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy.

AND they also created the wholesome "Gibbie Snacks" -- my Gibson's namesake treat -- that with every bag purchased from their online store, House Wolf donates $1 to The Wally Foundation. What a great effort on behalf of Canine Epilepsy Awareness!

Tonight, I had the pleasure of precording our special Purple Day episode of my "The Sibe Vibe" with Susan Sehi-Smith of the White Dog Diary blog, who is also the president/founder of the Paws to People: Bridges to Cures organization, all about Canine Epilepsy, her furangel Epi-dog, The Mighty Quinn, comparative research studies, and her Paws to People. Lots of great information. We'll be posting the link to
the show on Sunday, March 30. (I will come back and update it here, too, so everyone can listen in at their leisure).

Here are of my two prior "The Sibe Vibe" Dog Works
Radio shows where we talk all about Canine Epilepsy featuring Marion Mitchell of the Canine Epilepsy Resources and co-owner of the EPIL-K9 list, and Rick Selwood of The Wally Foundation.

Listen to Marion's show HERE.
Listen to Rick's show HERE.

Many thanks also to fellow Blogger Love is being owned by a Husky blog for helping to promote Purple Day! Stop by and say hi - it's a great, fun blog to visit!

How Gibson Spent Purple Day...

Gibson spent Purple Day decked out in his purple bandana, giving me Gibbie kisses, sending good wishes to all his Epi- and non-Epi-pals, getting his Epi blood panels drawn, and receiving some in-home laser treatments for his weak hind end and torn CCLs in the hopes of getting him up and on his feet stronger and soon. (He had taken a fall on Christmas Eve, spent six weeks in a brace and he still requires assistance for walking with a sling harness). He is determined and we are seeing progress each day. Here he is with one of his favorite vet techs, Jessica, getting his laser therapy:

And...my really BIG exciting announcement for today is for my soon-to-be-released book on Epi-dogs from across the world titled EPIc Dog Tales: Heartfelt Stories About Dogs Living & Loving Life With Canine Epilepsy. While I had hoped to have my release timed with today, we are not quite there yet and I do not want to rush this very special book. At this time, I do not have a specific release date \as we are in the editing and layout stages, it will be in the very near future. We'll be sure to post info on when you can order at that time from our indie publishing company ArcticHouse Publishing. A percentage of proceeds post-production costs will be donated to the Canine Epilepsy Resources "Emma's Fund." But for now, here's a sneak preview of the cover:

We hope on this Purple Day, people join together to bring awareness, hope, and support to all those who are living life with seizures. We honor them all.

Happy 9th Birthday To Our Alpha Queen, Harley! Celebrate by Entering to Win Her Book!

Wooo! It's our beautiful alpha queen Harley's 9th Birthday today! It's unbelievable that she was just a little puppy nine years ago! Time sure does fly! Harley is our very first Siberian Husky and she is what started the FiveSibes! My daughter has wanted a Husky ever since she was a young child and when we felt she was ready for the responsibility, she chose little 8-week-old Harley pup to become a part of our family. Harley joined our senior rescue dog, Chelsey, a German Shepherd/Akita mix. But soon her rambunctiousness required a mate that could match her energy: enter Gibson. And it was love at first sight! They have remained inseparable ever since! We call them our resident lovebirds or married couple! Then, when the three Pupsters came along a few years later, Harley was just amazing; she took them under wing and became a wonderful surrogate mother to them.

Woo! Party time!

Harley is an amazingly intelligent girl. She is always thinking and can sometimes think a little too much! She is a mix of sweetness and vinegar, sometimes at the same time! She may be nine, but she still thinks she is nine months old and loves to run, play "Slide the Sibe" (where she slides between my legs and then "grrrrs" and pushes you with her paws for more!), she can play Fetch! all day long, loves to run through the snow in the winter and the kiddie pool in the summer. She loves to bite at snow and make people chase her. She is famous for her football player-like body slams, and can sweetly nuzzle the pups or play rough and hard as only a Siberian can!

Woo! Cake time!

She can ride in a car as if she was born in one...but then again, she
spent many hours on the road with my husband in his police cruiser, attending court tucked under his arm and receiving lots of attention and "ooohs and ahhhs" from the clerks. She can be grumble if woken from a nap, but in the next breath poke you with her nose and give you "snuffs." She is such a beautiful girl (and she knows it!) and her big crystal blue eyes can get her out of trouble with just one glance!

Group nom-nom time!
We had so much fun celebrating her birthday today with a bone-shaped vanilla ice cream from our local dairy with a nice crunch topping of some wholesome crumbled "Paw-Nut Butter Nips" and our namesake "Gibbie Snacks" from those fabulous Vermont, USA bakers at House Wolf K-9 Dog Biscuits!

video

Did someone say "cake?!!!"

Looking back, it seems like just yesterday she was a little pup and then a "pre-teen" chasing a young Gibson all over the yard! Here's our annual Birthday video with a fond look back over the years she has been filling our lives with love!

And now she has an illustrated  FiveSibes™ Tales book all of her own! In celebration of her special day -- and with March being national Read Across America Month -- I am unveiling Getting Healthy With Harley~Learning About Health & Fitness! A fun book done in the style of my What's Wrong With Gibson? Learning About K-9 Epilepsy by our very talented illustrator, Michelle Litter. It's a fun way to learn about health and fitness and Harley tries to encourage the rest of the FiveSibes to get in better shape! The book has just gone to the printer today and will be available through our ArcticHouse Publishing and ready to ship in a couple weeks.

To celebrate Harley's birthday, we are holding a random Rafflecopter giveaway and one lucky winner will receive one of the first autographed copies of Getting Healthy With Harley! Enter below!

Happy Birthday, Harley! Here's to many more wonderful years together. We love you so!

Spring Ahead With Daylight Saving Time: Seasonal Health & Safety Tips

Gibson knows what time it is!

Wooo! It's Daylight Saving Time (DST) for many areas of the world, and for us, tomorrow morning (Sunday, March 9) at 2 AM, we "spring" our clocks ahead an hour, which means...Spring is on its way with daylight giving us longer days to have more fun  to run and play in the yard, go for hikes, long walks, BBQ lots of nom-noms, and swims in the pool. It's also the perfect time to remember some seasonal health and safety tips:

  • PET MEDICATIONS TIME: If your pet is on specifically timed medications (like our Epi-Husky Gibson who is on meds he must take 12 hours apart), you can help reset your pet's internal clock for these medications by staggering them by a half-hour starting on Sunday. Example: If your pet had been receiving their dosages at 7:30 AM before DST, then under the first day of the new time, give it to them at 8:00 AM*; then do the same for the PM dosage. On the second day, you can return back to the normal time by backing up the dosage another half hour bringing it to the designated 7:30 dosage time. This way, there will be no long delay in their dosage schedule that could possibly affect the gentle balance of medication levels. *This is the method I use. It may not be right for everyone's pet, so please check with your vet.

  • BATTERY CHECK: Replace batteries and check connections for pet cams, room/baby monitors, and smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • FIRE EXTINGUISHERS. Check to see when the last time your fire extinguishers were checked and verified. Be sure they are working properly.

  • PET ALERT WINDOW CLINGS: Be sure pet window clings are visible on the outside so fire fighters can easily see, and be sure they are not faded from time and sun. If you need a replacement, you can Google "Pet Window Clings," or visit ASPCA for a FREE safety pack, that includes their Poison Control info on a magnet to keep handy.

  • PET ID TAGS: Check all pet tags to be sure they are all up to date with current info.

  • MICROCHIP: Check your pet’s microchip information and be sure it has been updated with any new info, such as a new address, new vet, new phone numbers, etc. Be sure to update info with not only the as microchip company, but also your vet’s office. If your pet is not yet mircrochipped--please have it done just in case your pet gets lose, lost, or is stolen.

  • HEARTWORM/FLEA/TICK PREVENTATIVES: If your pet is on Heartworm and flea/tick preventative, and you do not do it all year long, be sure to visit your vet, have your pet tested for Heartworm and parasites, and start them on the preventative for the season before the warmer weather begins.

  • PET FIRST AID KIT: Review your pet's emergency/First Aid Kit to be sure things are up-to-date. Replace anything that has expired. With the arrival of bees, it's a good idea to check with your vet about including Benadryl® in the kit and what the proper dosage for your pet would be.

  • BEDDING: Take the time to check out all the winter bedding and give them a good spring cleaning or replacement. Buying new beds? Why not wash up and mend the old ones and see if your local dog shelter could use them.

  • EXPIRATION DATES: Check all pet meds, vitamins, food, and care products for expiration dates (and be sure they are kept out of reach of furkids).

  • EMERGENCY CONTACTS: Update all vet and emergency contacts, including Poison Control, in your home and in your cell phones. Do you have the Pet Poison Helpline Phone App? Click HERE for info.

Put Us On Your Fridge & By Your Phones:

If you’re calling from Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands, you can reach Pet Poison Helpline toll-free at 877-416-7319. Other Caribbean islands can reach us at 011-1-952-853-1716.

A $65 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card.

  • GEAR: Check out all leashes, harnesses, and collars to be sure they are not frayed, chewed, or otherwise compromised.

  • OUTDOOR SAFETY #1: With the arrival of warmer weather, give your yard a good safety check and remove any dangerous or poisonous items and mend any broken fences, gates, etc. Get down to your pet's level and see it from their perspective. Is there anything dangerous lying around that was hidden under snow, water, or mud? Any "escape" holes? Any places where wildlife or insects can build a home? Any salt or poisonous winter items around where they can now get to them?

  • OUTDOOR SAFETY #2: With the unveiling of pools and grills, be sure you have safety mechanisms in place so your beloved pet can not get burnt, drown, or get hurt. If you have an in-ground pool, even if you have it gated, be sure you have a pet ladder so if they accidentally fall in, they have a way out.

  • KEEP 'EM COOL: Invest in a kiddie pool or two now before they are sold out for the summer. A fun, inexpensive way for your pet to cool down on the upcoming hot days.

  • WATER: Always keep fresh, cool water available.

  • CORD SAFETY: Test run fans and A/Cs and check the cords to be sure they are not frayed, cut, or chewed.

  • BEAT THE HEAT: Remember when walking your dog in the warmer weather, to do so during the coolest points of the day - early AM and late PM - so as not to overheat them. Also be conscious of the hot pavement and roads on their paws; keep to the grassy sides if possible or shady areas. And always bring along a bottle of water.

Have fun, be safe, and here's to a great Spring!
